A LEAGUE OF OUR OWN

A gentle reminder that the Justice League Unlimited universe is back in the new seven issue mini-series Justice League Infinity, which hit the shops yesterday. Co-written with JLU producer James Tucker and drawn by Ethen Beavers, with superb color work by Nick Filardi, the series picks up right where the TV show left off and then explodes across the multiverse.  It's been a genuine pleasure working with James, Ethen, Nick, and our editor Andrew Marino and returning to these classic characters. You can find a short preview of JL Infinity #1 below. Hope you come along for the ride!

  1. I read the issue... Dematteis.

It was a strong enough start. It did make me wonder if there has ever been a comic (including main DCU) where J'onn (you know...J'onzz?) where he reflects on his unique views on gender, culture, ethnicity, and what have you, as an outsider who has been a sampler of all the possibilities.

Though, I do wonder what schism happened between he and the league from the series finally, and why he abandoned his wife in China. hmmm.... curious.

I am glad to see Amazo back, it was my second favorite part of the show (favorite being Ollie and Question's relationship, damn McDuffie wrote great back and forth... deal with it). So I am on board. One Amazo story was the closest we will ever get to a Defenders animated series.

I also LOVED the words. My God it was so nice to see captions with words. I bought other comics this week and one of them had such a fleshed out issue or as many glorious words.

I was disappointed by one thing. The flagrant false advertisement. It was called Justice League INFINITY, and I could not help but notice that the issue ended. For shame!

I will expect an apology on my desk by noon.

So... how long do we have to wait for the Justice League Detroit starring sequel to get green-lit? An hour? A work day? Certainly it won't take until the weekend.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it, Jack. The response has been fantastic so far.

If you look in J'onn/Amrit's apartment, you'll see a photo of his wife on one of the tables. What happened to her? We can't be sure. Perhaps she passed away, perhaps the relationship ended. And maybe we'll address it in a forthcoming JL INFINITY mini-series. (IF they let us do another one.)

    2. For a guy who only has one issue out, you seem to have a lot of maybes in store for sequels.

I noticed no apology for the false advertisement, but ... whatever.

I ALSO noticed that teh avowed Scrubs fan (you) included the JLU character voiced by Dr. Cox (teh Atom).

    3. That's right! I forgot John C. did the Atom's voice. So many great voice actors on that show. (My favorite remains Ed Asner as Granny Goodness!)

    4. I'm not sure he counts as a JLU casting since he was left over from Superman the animated series. So, following that logic, isn't Kevin Conroy the best casting?

The SPECIFICALLY JLU voice I was most impressed by was Ollie Queen. Not for any of the Norman reason. The voice was just so close, not exact but close, to how he sounded in my head when reading the comics before the show was a thing. It was weird hearing him for teh first time.

By the way did you know Ed Asner was also Lou Grant in Lou Grant?

SO, you did not remember that Dr. Cox played the Atom, yet you still wrote him in despite having no real function in the issue? Or connection to the Flash?

You know what Jersey Cox always war on the show Scrubs right? The fates, or God, or providence, or what have you, is trying to tell you something.

+ fates are sending you a message, Dematteis.

    5. That's one BIG space there, Jack.

Ed Asner played a character named Lou Grant? Who knew?

    6. That space was not intentional.

Legend has it, Asner also played the character Lou Grant on some other TV show called Mary Tyler Moore, but it is probably one of those old TV rumors based on nonsense.

By the way, how many issues is Justice League Infinity?

  2. Speaking if crazy signs for this series (and were were a while ago on this page, in relation to Dr. Cox jersey).

You say a sequel would focus on J'onn... well he was not always the heart of the Justice League. HE started doing that in the JLD days. And he developed a type of father daughter relationship with Gypsy for a short while after the book ended. He has also been shown to have cared about the two casualties... maybe the only one in the DCU beside Gypsy who does.

Say... a series around non-big 7 members, with J'onn at the core, you did that afterwards. Funny ow that works.

Okay, this time I really am going to try to be done talking about them for real. I am sure my passion for them is really annoying. Even though I have so many thoughts, I will keep them underwraps as best as I can.

    My apologies.

    2. Speaking of the Justice League, there is something I have wanted to ask you for a while.

You might not remember, because is has been a while.

When you wrote Justice League: Realworlds, were you reading a lot of Stephen King?

      Jack

      Delete
    3. Nope. I read a ton of King in the 70s, but only sporadically after that. And there was no King influence on that story.

    4. I see what you are saying. You blame King and Lawnmower Man for dragging down the sales on what should have been the Trillion dollar selling first appearance of Greenberg the Vampire.

Obviously you are right Dematteis, but you have to give the new kids a shot once in a while. He still might make it one day.

Sure it has been a while since that day, but I say th kid had potential.

    5. If he keeps plugging away, there's a good chance he'll make it. But he's got to give up on this horror stuff. There's no future in that.

  3. Do you think the guy who came up with the phrase "don't trust anyone over 30" back in the 60s s regretting it now?
