RETURN TO SHAMBALLA

September will see the release of a new Doctor Strange Masterworks that will reprint Into Shamballa: the Doctor Strange graphic novel I did in collaboration with the late Dan Green. The book will also include a tribute to Dan that I wrote.

I'm delighted Shamballa will be returning, but sorry Dan's not here to see some of his finest work back in print.

  1. Such a beautiful work. Really deserves a lavish reprinting such as this. What a talent Dan Green was! Karlos

  2. Shamballa is definitely my favorite read; all the work done on the quest to overcome the trials imposed on the character perfectly represents the daily life of the Sorcerer Supreme. Even in the pursuit of the smallest details, he faces an equally arduous trial, both in body and spirit. It's magnificent. I hope you have no problem answering a question for me. I'm fascinated by the witty way the name "DeMatteis" works with this whole issue of illusory reality, as if everything were a dream of the creator himself. I've seen his work both at Marvel in Man-Thing/Doctor Strange and at DC, with Sandman. And my question is more related to how the narrative behaves in relation to the characters. I like to try to make connections between the stories. Within Marvel, would it be plausible to say that one of Doctor Strange's most dangerous villains embodies this divine dream? Obviously, I'm referring to Nightmare, which encompasses the concept of dreams itself. I can't help but think there's a parallel between them, and it keeps nagging at me. Is there a possibility of this theory becoming reality, or is that a distant prospect?

    1. Thanks for your kind words about INTO SHAMBALLA. It remains a favorite of mine. Re: Nightmare: The interpretation varies from writer to writer, from story to story, but I see him as one limited aspect of the Larger Dream of Creation. He may think he's the embodiment of the dream, but he's just a manifestation of the darker aspects of the collective unconscious. That's the way I see it, other writers may view it differently and be equally correct!
