Two books coming tomorrow from Marvel: What If...? Spider-Man—with extraordinary art by Yildiray Cinar—which revisits Kraven's Last Hunt and asks the question "What if Kraven survived his last hunt?"...
..and Rocket Rewind, which features the first ever meeting of Rocket Raccoon and his progenitor Rocky Raccoon. (Read the story and you'll understand.) This wonderfully absurd tale is perfectly illustrated by my old friend and collaborator Shawn McManus.

DeleteI read the What if, I won't lie Dematteis, if you had come to me as an editor and told me you were planning to both do a retelling of Hamlet with Spider-Man characters AND make it a metaphor for the growing literatacy crisis in the U.S. (and Europe, and and Japan, Canda, and Latin America ,and the UK), I would have said you were biting off more than you could chew. But, I will be damned if you did not make an entertaining story.
ReplyDeleteAnd the use of of the symbiote as the corrosive nature of tech addiction and Kraven as the "old ways" was a clever twist
And the Death of Vermin as the .false moral panics making this issue easier to dismiss was clever. in and of itself.
That having been said, Doc Ock as Yorick was a little on the nose... albeit enjoyable.
Also, the artists did a pretty good job of echoing the tone of the original Kraven's Last Hunt.
