Dematteis, you wrote teh Life and TImes of Savior 28.
ReplyDeleteThere is somethnig very of its time about this stroy, not in a bad way, just that you can tell it was written in 2009, sort of like how you can tell Ostrander's Martian Manhunter was written oin teh late 90s or that Salem;s Lot was written in the 70s. There is just a certain amout of "Yes We Can" vibe to it.
So, my question is, if someone came up to you and said they not only wanted to make an animated movie about it, but that they wanted you to write it, how differnet of a story do you think it would be?
Obviously the main beats would be teh same, the main character would act teh same, the point and plot would be teh same. How do you think wrigin it in teh current era would effect the retelling?

I was actually thinking about that very thing the other day, Jack. Considering the original idea came while I was writing Captain America in the Reagan years and the story sat on the shelf till the Bush/Obama years, it's a pretty flexible premise. And given today's nightmarish political landscape, I think the story could be even more relevant and even more urgent. But, as you note, the basic bones, the basic themes, would remain the same.

DeleteWhat if Jim Shooter instead of just not publishing the story said, ""why don't you come up with a new character for the story and the take it to the Epic line?"
What if in 1993, Karen Berger had said, "I was just remembering how Captain America is not accept my date offer and IO kind of what to bug him, remember that Captain America story you told me about, how about you change the name and launch it as part of this new Vertigo thing DC had me doing?"
only a few years earlier as part of a more in-swing War on Terror would have changed a lot of the story in some big ways.
It is sort of like how Boston Legals; political disagreements seem adorable now. Or how the nature of the Federation on Star Trek changed fro the 60s to the late 80s and 90s, whee Ric
ker, the Kirk like figure, was now a second-in-command and unsure of leadership and a bit more... modern.. with his Ladies man persona, whereas Picard in the original series would have to be the guy who learns the Federation's policies work that far from civilization. They are fundamentally the same premise and philosophy, but the fine details more match their time of creation.
.I kind of really want this fictional animated movie now, there could be a whole genre of writers adapting their comics to other media so to further explore themes, and contrast realities of the time without having to do a reboot.
