THE CATS ARE BACK

The ThunderCats return to Cartoon Network on Saturday, March 24th, at 9:30 am and I'm happy to report that the first of the new T-Cats episodes—"New Alliances"—is one of mine.  Here are a couple of preview clips.  Enjoy!

  1. This is offtopic, but I see they're collecting Cap 290-300 as "Death of the Red Skull." That's kind of cool and it's kind of a shame, because it means the Zeck material got passed over.

As much as I enjoy the Skull arc, I actually prefer the lighter material that preceded it. There's something about that era where Steve is hanging out with his friends like a normal guy that really stands out, even more so than his 'final' battle with the Skull. There's never been an era like before or since, and the disappearance of those friendships left a vaccuum in Steve's life.

I didn't read the run when it was first hitting the stands, but my personal preference would have been to have seen Steve continue to balance his life as 'one of the guys' with his obligations as Captain America. I think I could read about that for as long as you wanted to write it!

  2. I'd love to see the entire CAP run collected, David; but for now I'm happy to see the Skull storyline between two covers (even if the final issue of that arc was pretty much butchered). I know that the Deathlok arc Mike Zeck and I did has been collected in the past, but, as you note, there were other good stories, as well. (And some terrific fill-in work from Sal Buscema.)

A lot of the credit for Cap's "one of the guys" era has to go to Roger Stern, who set all that up during his run. I built on the wonderful foundation he laid down.

  3. Between his work on ASM, CAP, and AVENGERS, I wouldn't argue with anyone who said that Roger Stern is the unsung architect of the Modern Marvel Universe.

I think my favorite DeMatteis/Zeck Cap arc was the Nomad/Viper one.

  4. We're in agreement on both those things, David. Roger's work was, in many ways, the cornerstone of the 80's Marvel Universe.

And that Viper story is the one where Zeck and I found each other creatively, where the words and the pictures really started coming together.

  5. Do you know what James Tucker is currently working on? I noticed he isn't working with Michael Jelenic, Todd Casey and you on Thundercats.

  6. Don't quote me, Nelson, but I think I heard James is very involved with Warners direct-to-DVD projects these days.

  7. According to a Young Justice: Invasion box art, we might possibly be seeing Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes on Young Justice.
