POD PEOPLE

Did an interview this morning with a new podcast called The V-Spot.  Despite some heavy sibilance in the phone lines, we had a great time talking about storytelling, the creative process and the joys of comic book collaboration. We also took a nostalgic tour through my work on Spider-Man and Captain America. If you're interested in listening, I've embedded the interview below.

  1. Got into an art school? Any chance that we'll see an all Dematteis comic? or at least a few sketches up on this website.

But I think you brought up an interesting point about the new way of higher ups calling more shots. It is interesting that in the 1970's every comic, not just creator, had it's own feel. However, comics now seem to be increasingly homogenous. The so called "new 52" adds to this. And of course this isn't to say good writers can find away to express them selves or that the stories are not enjoyable... but it does sometimes make good books easier to drop. I sometimes wonder if writers sometimes pray a less popular books stay that way so they can do what they want.

About Arnie, I have to agree with how well done it was. Of the gay people I have known none have ever constantly tells you they are gay... but still that is how Marvel and DC seem to like to portray the situation. So, yes good job.

About Gru, yes all you said was true, but you forgot the most complementary thing about him... card-carrying PKD fan.

    good interview.

wishing, you nothing, but goodwill and hipness from here to the stars,
    Jack

    1. Don't remember Gruenwald being a PKD fan, Jack (doesn't mean we didn't talk about it, just that it's been a long time and I probably forgot), but it certainly makes sense. As I said in the interview, he was a wonderful editor and a great guy and, to this day, he is sorely missed.

My art skills have atrophied over the years so there's ZERO chance you'll ever see me illustrate a comic book. (I will occasionally do a goofy self-caricature at conventions, but, believe me, Great Art it's not!) But the fact that I started out as an artist only increased my appreciation of those who can really draw, and bring a story to life. Appreciation? Awe is more like it!

    1. I'm far enough north of NYC that—although we got rain and some spookily heavy winds—we came through pretty much unscathed. Thanks for asking, Jack!

  3. It's problematic for me to listen to streaming audio online, do you know if there's way to get this podcast in mp3 format?

  5. The only superhero comic I'm currently reading is the Thunderbolts due to the fact that I've always enjoyed stories about villains attempting to change their lives for the better.
The 2nd Baron Zemo has become one of my favorite Marvel characters due to his rather lengthy character arc over the course of the Thunderbolts series. I had no idea that you were the one who bought him back from obscurity and made his character much more complex.

    1. It's nice to know that a character I contributed to all those years ago has evolved into a major player in the MU, Eve. It's like leaving footprints in the sand.
