DREAMING AGAIN

A brand new edition of Brooklyn Dreams is coming in September.

There are one or two projects I love as much as BD, but none that I love more than this (thinly-veiled) memoir of my childhood and teenage years growing up in the strange and wondrous land of Brooklyn. Artist Glenn Barr—who brought my memories to life with such skill and vision—and I are both delighted that Dark Horse is bringing this back,
spearheaded by editor Philip Simon (who oversaw our Eisner-nominated reprinting of Moonshadow). You can find the hype, straight from DH, below...

                                                           ***

The critically acclaimed graphic novel from J.M. DeMatteis (Moonshadow, Girl in the Bay) and Glenn Barr (Hellboy Junior, Seekers into the Mystery), Brooklyn Dreams returns to print with Dark Horse Comics. Readers can complete their collection with the highly sought-after, hilarious, and mysterious semi-memoir by DeMatteis with a powerful new cover from Barr. This edition includes an all-new introduction from DeMatteis, along with a breathtaking sketchbook section, DeMatteis’s early notes about the series, and other enlightening extras.

Vincent Carl Santini wants to tell you a story about his senior year in high school, but memory is a tricky thing. A single story becomes a hilarious, heartfelt, and occasionally harrowing journey through all of Santini’s childhood. Growing up in 1960’s and 70’s Brooklyn, J.M. DeMatteis and Glenn Barr’s Brooklyn Dreams is a nostalgic visit to a very specific time and place, with a universal search for hope and meaning.

Be ready when Brooklyn Dreams returns to print in a 392-page, 6.625” x 10.1875” hardcover edition, in book stores on September 2, 2025 and comic shops September 3, 2025, for $34.99. Pre-order now from TFAW, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, your local bookstore, or visit Comic Shop Locator for more details and stores near you.

  1. A story about your life growing up on the farm? okay, if you think that will sell. I guess lovers of the agrarian life need books as well.

Interestingly enough, this guy G.N. DeMArcus wrote a thinly veiled biography called "Bronx Naps" back in the 90s, it was about how just before his Freshman year of college he found a stray Iguana, and it follows his year, collimating in taking some magic mushrooms that unlock his mind only to realize it was not actually not functioning.

That sounds about right.I think it also revealed he was supposed to be born a triplet.

Either way THAT was a good comic. You should look it up some time.

  2. We all know teh thing you are most excited for this CHristmas is Ann Nocenti's card.

    I assume it will go:

    Dear Dematteis,

The trip to Detroit was fantastic. You were absolutely correct. Meeting that fellow at the show was a true conscious raising experience.

I never knew life could be so wonderful, and the truths of the universe so open to me. Life is truly a blessed gift...more than it ever has been before. Each day finer and more glorious.

    ANN
P.S. I am a little worried he thinks less of me, I was not able to hide teh OXygen addiction.

To which you will (I assume) reply:

    Annie,

I am so glad you finally got the chance I was beginning to worry you would never walk in there glow of his majestic presence.

You now embark on a life more glorious than you can imagine. I envy you for still having teh path ahead of you, but I am glad you finally have it.

    Your friend,
    J.M. "The Galactic goldfish" Dematteis

P.S. don't worry. He knows of the Oxygen addiction Italians have, and does not judge. He knows we can;t help it. Like any good messiah of the cosmos would.

  3. Hello, John! Speaking of dreams, how about you to write a comic book about Nightmare (Marvel dreamlord)/Sandman (DC dreamlord)? Or at least a series in which they will have an immediate role.

    1. Nightmare is a fascinating character that I'd love to explore. Hope I get the opportunity!

    2. Can you suggest this to Marvel's editorial staff that they consider it?

    3. The projects I work on at Marvel are more up to them than me, but if an opportunity arises, I'll give it the old college try.
