I don't appear at comic book conventions very often—I'm an extremely private person and I don't deal with crowds all that well—but, the next few weeks, I'll be appearing at two: the Baltimore Comic Con in, well...Baltimore (I bet you saw that coming, didn't you?) and the Big Apple Comic Con in New York City. What makes these appearances worthwhile for me is the opportunity to meet the folks who read, and appreciate, my work and talk to them, one on one. If you're in Baltimore this coming weekend or in NYC the following week, please stop by and say hello. Before you know it my keepers will be carrying me back to my tower, in that misty land between Abadazad and Imaginalis. Who knows when they'll let me out again?
I remember meeting you at the NYCC in April 2008 (you weren't officially announced as a guest until AFTER I'd already flown to NY from Vegas, but I just happened to have a couple things for you to sign that I'd brought for other people as well), and really enjoyed talking to you. I bought a copy of Brooklyn Dreams right there at the show, and read it sometime after I'd gotten back home. Tremendously enjoyed it, one of those books you should be most proud of. Actually, that's why I got it at the show, you told me it was one of your favorites of your own work. Hopefully you'll come out of your tower again next October for the next installment of the NYCC, and that I'll know beforehand (I'd love to get you to sign my Kraven, Blood, Shamballa, etc.), and that I can get to talk directly to you about philosophy, Buddhism, and maybe comics too!

I was going to try to make it down to Baltimore this weekend, but, alas, I am a poor college student and it quite possibly would have been fiscally irresponsible of me to make the trip.

ReplyDeleteI just got back from Baltimore and it was a low-key, incredibly friendly convention. No TV stars, no video game companies, no Hollywood studios. Just comic book fans and creators enjoying each other's company. Which, in this day and age, is a rarity!
