Thanks to the kind folks at IDW Publishing, I just received an advance copy of the new hardcover edition of Brooklyn Dreams. I'm happy to report that Chris Ryall, Justin Eisenger and their entire team have done a fantastic job. Something about a hardcover adds a feeling of permanence to the book and the larger size—significantly bigger than the previous collection—really lets Glenn Barr's extraordinary art shine.
There are few projects of mine that mean as much to me as BD and none that mean more. The IDW edition releases on January 11th: a great start to the new year.
Wow! That looks great! I'm curious to see this. As much as I love the compact nature of small books, when it comes to comics, I always ENJOY the larger format, way more. This is particularly true with things that have a lot going on. Tin Tin definitely looks better in the large European format (Herge tended to draw 12 panels on a page, but even his splash pages were glorious in a larger format). And Abadazad was meant for a larger page, in my humble opinion. Nice cover for Brooklyn Dreams.
ReplyDeleteThe book isn't in some massive album size, Eruch, but it's a taller, wider package than the more compact, Manga-like edition that DC put out. And, as you note, that extra space really lets the art breathe.
ReplyDeleteIt's sitting here on my desk and I just keep LOOKING at it. Makes me happy!
Do you know that Aquaman sitcom "The Currys of Atlantis" from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. They could easily make DC Nation shorts out of that, and they can have the setting in Aquaman's house in Atlantis and the Justice League Satellite.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me, Nelson! We always saw the Giffen-DeMatteis Justice League as a super hero sitcom and your idea certainly fits that bill.
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays!
Congrats JMD! The book looks great and IDW puts out a lot of good stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rob! And you're right: IDW puts out a diverse line of books and they've really had lasting power in the market.
ReplyDeleteSequel!!!
ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea, Jeff.
ReplyDeleteI just finished a piece for OCCUPY COMICS that's very much in the BD mode. Along with the new edition of BROOKLYN DREAMS, it has me thinking of doing another project in that vein, if not necessarily a direct sequel.
I keep thinking I'd like to do a comics version of my "Meeting Lennon" story. That would be fun!
Cool!
ReplyDeleteAlso, Eduardo Barretto, who drew your wonderful Speeding Bullets story passed away a few days ago-- he did some really nice work and just wanted to give him a mention.
I was asked to say something for a website doing a memorial to Eduardo, Jeff. Here's what I wrote:
ReplyDeleteI wasn't all-that familiar with Eduardo's work before he was assigned the art for my Elseworlds story, Speeding Bullets, but it didn't take me long to become a major fan. The story, which combined the Superman and Batman myths, wasn't an easy one to draw, but Barreto came through with a wonderful job filled with mood, emotion, dynamic (and flawless) storytelling, power, subtlety. He delivered everything I wanted—and more. I suspect most writers he worked with would say the same.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Eduardo's family.
Wow! That is one handsome edition. I think I need to upgrade...
ReplyDeleteIt looks even better in person, Dru. I'm really delighted with the job IDW did on this.
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays!
Congrats, JMD--few things are worthier of the hardcover treatment than BD. And IDW really is a fantastic publisher. Will there be a digital edition, too?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about Eduardo's passing. I love SPEEDING BULLETS. It's one of my favorite Elseworlds tales.
Best,
David
Yes, David, there will absolutely be a digital edition of BD.
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at SPEEDING BULLETS this morning.
What awonderful job Eduardo did on that.
Can't wait to get this!
ReplyDeleteDeep thanks! I'm very excited about it (as you probably know)!
ReplyDeleteI've just looked at the dimensions on Amazon and I think it's going to end up quickly on my wishlist (having two versions of the same book, is it really reasonable in these times of crisis? ;)).
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised though that the cover Amazon is showing looks like it was extracted from the French cover from Futuropolis, and on your photo it's not the same cover at all. Is there a dust cover that you removed?
The cover Amazon is featuring isn't the IDW cover, Stephane, and I have NO CLUE why they're using that image. So no...no dust jacket.
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting the new BD on your wish list. VERY much appreciated. And may your wishes come true!
