A box of these magically appeared on my front porch the other day: the collected edition of my entire Dr. Fate run (both the mini-series with Keith Giffen and the ongoing with Shawn McManus—along with our one and only annual, illustrated by Tom Sutton). This massive collection won't hit stores till May, but, since I've waited decades for it, another month won't matter.
When it does arrive in shops, I'll share the introduction I wrote, looking back on this series—which remains near and dear to my heart.
That Dr. Fate book was part of a very interesting few books. Like tepee criminally underrated THE WEIRD, it was a pre-Vetigo book that existed after Karen Berger developed her unique editorial voice.
ReplyDeleteThe closest to Vetigo in mainstream DC you can get.
Books that you are surprised are. Or Vertigo, until you look up the editor and see…it kind of was.
Very interesting moment at DC.
Feel free to tell people,I recommend the book, that will probably get them flying off the shelves.

Yes, it was a great time. Dr. Fate I was given the same freedom, I'd have on a creator-owned book. It was indeed the pre-Vertigo Vertigo era.
DeleteI have always felt that the post-crisis to early 90s DC was in some ways a type of recapturing of the magic of the 70s. Partially, because they were willing to try almost anything for a while.
DeleteI think a lot of comic fans want the medium to be like Jazz. Jazz was originally raucous dance music. However, after WWII, because of musicians like John Coltrane, Theloneous Monk, and Charlie Parker it started to mutate, and become many things. Including classy.
I think both Marvel in the 70s and DC in the late 80s really helped that push.
Jack
I agree wholeheartedly. 1970s Marvel and post-Crisis 1980s DC are what AI consider the true “golden age” of comic books. I could enjoy reading almost any comic from that period.
DeleteOutside of that windowframe, there are certainly comics from Marvel and DC I love, but there are a ton of comics I’m not interested in reading.
Those were indeed heady, creative days.
DeleteHow many did they send you? Do you give extra copies to family and friends?
ReplyDeleteThe number varies from publisher to publisher. Some are very generous, some are...less so. I will share copies with family and friends a) if they're interested and b) if I have enough copies on hand.
DeleteHow far down the line do DC send copies? I mean, McManus and maybe Giffen's family obviously get copies, but what about the inker(s), letterer(s) and colorist(s)? Does it depend on how much of the collection they worked on? Do editors get copies?
DeleteSorry to bug you with these questions but this topic has captured my imagination for some reason. Really looking forward to this coming out. I'd love to see the rest of the series collected as I left it when you did (though I'm not sure why as I like William Messner-Loebs' other work at DC).
I'm honestly not sure how far down the line it goes, Daniel. And don't worry, you're not bugging me!
DeleteIf this collection does well, then I suspect they'll collect the rest of the series.
This is very exciting. I bought the digital versions of these issues some years ago during a sale. Read it, loved it, and was very surprised by it because it wasn't a typical comic book superhero. I plan on buying the physical copy as soon as it comes out.
ReplyDeleteCan you refresh my memory: would this be suitable for a 13 year old? Would it get a PG-13 rating, or an R?
I love that you still post on your blog. Blogs are way better than social media. Thank you.
Thanks, Randy! I think the suitability depends on the 13 year old. There's nothing blatantly sexual, no over the top violence—but it would be best if you looked the stories over first and made that decision.
DeleteAnd, yes, I enjoy keeping this blog going. Feel free to come back and comment any time.
Sounds reasonable. I do plan on re-reading it when it comes out. I prefer physical books so much more than digital; I think I retain more when reading a physical book.
DeleteFates willing, I'll be buying two copies of Dr. Fate.
And I appreciate it!
