BOOSTING BOOSTER

Newsarama is running an interview with yours truly—and some guy named Giffen—talking about our upcoming stint on Booster Gold.  It's filled with profound insights and mind-boggling observations about life, the universe and everything, so you won't want to miss it.  Okay, it's mostly just hype—but it's good, clean, All-American hype.  If you're a fan of the Giffen-DeMatteis brand of super-heroic hijinks, I think you'll enjoy it.

  1. I tried an issue of Booster Gold when Geoff Johns was still co-writing it and I liked it. Never got into the comic regularly though. Always meant to pick a trade, but never have.

I have to say though, I'm VERY excited about this. I haven't read all of the old Justice League issues, but the issues I've read I really enjoyed. Plus I liked Heroes Squared. The Giffen/DeMatties team is great. I will try to pick up Booster Gold again when you guys take over. I'm sure its going to be a lot of fun. :)

  2. Glad you enjoyed HERO SQUARED, Daniel: of all the Giffen-DeMatteis projects, it's my favorite. As for BOOSTER: I can make a pretty safe bet that it will be fun. Let me know if it isn't!

  3. I think your first arc should last about 37 issues and feature Booster and Ted searching for various treasures buried by G'nort in the sands of (you guessed it) Kooey Kooey Kooey! Of course, they sccidentally dig up a psychologically tortured entity whose underlying issues can only heal via intense interaction with both her clone and her alternate-self. G'nort falls in love with the clone, Booster with her alternate-self and Ted with the actual entity-- but they face an ugly challenge when the 3 selves merge and force the three of them to do the same... G'nooster Beetle!

  4. Hey, wait a minute -- how did you find out all the details of our first arc? But seriously, Jeff: If we can come up with a story half as imaginative as yours, we'll be in great shape!

  5. Happy New Day, J.M.!

This news brings me a surprising range of emotions.

I've been following Booster Gold for a while now, and he's nearly become my favorite everyman/Fool who's gaining stride along his Hero's Journey. He's no longer the Booster from the front-end of 52, that's for sure.

So a large part of me is quite thrilled and excited to see the Giffen-DeMatteis take on this journeying hero. But then there's a small part that fears the Booster no-Gold will take off, as he becomes a bumbling excuse for a 'What If...' blender of concepts that are easily written off as alternate timelines.

But as it simmers, this stew of potentials... Moonshadow meets Metal Men, Seekers into the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine... I sure do enjoy the aromas I'm catching whiffs of.

    Thanks, and good luck,

  6. It's going to be interesting, Tim, joining Booster at this stage of his life: he's come a long way since the 80's. I look forward to discovering, and exploring, who he is now -- as well as revisiting some old friends from the JLI days.

  7. Sad as I may be that the Metal Men backup is going away (which has been fantastic), I am THRILLED by this news. My disappointment at how cheaply (in my opinion) the Ted Kord Beetle was treated by DC led me to lose much of my interest in DC, but you and Keith continue to give me reasons to put in the hour drive down to my nearest comics shop.

I am also very excited at the idea of something developed by the two of you for television (even more excited that it may somehow be Hero Squared related).

Keep up all the great work. I hope this is the start of a very long run on Booster Gold.

  8. I'm equally sad about METAL MEN'S demise, Drew. I was loving that series and those characters. That said, I'm looking forward to jumping into the BOOSTER book and hoping that, somewhere along the line, we can get the MM in there for a guest shot.

Re: HERO SQUARED. The network involved doesn't want an "official" announcement yet, but this has been in the works for some time and Keith and I have been intimately involved. As soon as we're allowed to shout it from the (cyber) rooftops, I'll post the news right here.

  9. Mr. DeMatteis, I know this is a little late but I just found this blog. I was just wondering how serious you were about using Ted Kord in the new Booster Gold book? A lot of writers reently have said they would have Ted Kord in there but then it would turn out to be an imposter or a zombie or he would be dead and gone again the next issue. Do you really think you will be able to get some Ted Kord fun into Booster Gold?

    Thank you.

  10. Without going into details, Anonymous (because where would be the fun in that?), I can absolutely say that you'll be getting authentic "Ted Kord fun" in BOOSTER GOLD.

Thanks for checking in. All the best -- JMD
