PROCESS

Some folks don't understand how the plot-first (or so-called Marvel style) of writing comics works, so I thought I'd share a page from a plot for the 2022 Ben Reilly: Spider-Man series. This went out to the artist, David Baldeon, and I wrote the final captions/dialogue after I saw the art.

For contrast, here's an example of full script. This is from Wisdom, the supernatural western I did with Tom Mandrake for the DeMultiverse Kickstarter.  (DeMultiverse Phase II coming soon!)

Hope you enjoyed this peak behind the comic book curtain!

  1. Thanks for the insight JMD, I've been plotting out comics for the last two and a half years and it's always interesting to see how plot-driven layouts function and the level of understanding and co-operation between writer and artist.

    1. It all comes down to that magic chemistry between writer and artist. It's either there or it's not. You can't create it!

  2. Absolutely love seeing the way these plots are scripted, especially for Ben Reilly: Spider-Man! You and David Baldeon's work on that story made my YEAR in 2022. Such an emotionally powerful story.

I am a huge fan of your work and am actually currently trying to fulfill a dream project of mine for the 30th anniversary of the Clone Saga. I could not find any sort of professional contact email for you, so I thought I'd try my hand here since I typically try and keep up with the blog.

I have a Scarlet Spider hoodie that I am attempting to get signed by as many of the creatives behind the story as I possibly can, in hopes of framing and preserving it in celebration of my favorite comic book story of all time.

I would love to try and get your signature on it, if possible, since you had an important part in crafting Ben Reilly into the character that has inspired me the most in my life. I am willing and able to cover any signature costs, as well as any shipping costs if I would be able to send it to you. If there’s any way we could make it happen, I would just really love to have you be part of it!

    Best regards,
    Ethan

    1. Hi, Ethan. Thanks so much for the kind words about my work. Deeply appreciated. Ben is such a wonderful character and I loved working on that mini-series with David Baldeon.

Re: your hoodie. Best bet would be to find me at a convention. At the moment, I've got nothing lined up in 2024, but there IS a chance I'll be at the Albany Comic Con in June. If any other con appearances come around, I'll be sure to announce them here.

Thanks again for getting in touch and for your kind words about my work.
